우리는 반려동물인 개와 고양이를 포함하여 중국에서 모피를 위해 희생되는 수백만 동물들의 말못할 고통에 눈 감지 말아 달라고 호소하기 위해 편지를 씁니다. 저희는 2008년 북경 올림픽개최에 앞서 동물보호법을 제정해주실 것을 촉구합니다. 끔찍한 모피산업을 방관하여 국제적인 행사을 앞두고 있는 중국의 이미지가 흐려지지 않기를 바랍니다. 우리는 특히 즉각 중국의 개, 고양이 모피무역을 금지하는 법안을 상정할 것과 동물복지법률 내에 살아있는 동물의 모피를 벗겨내는 행위를 금지할 것을 촉구합니다.

중국의 모피산업의 잔혹성은 비밀리에 조사된 적 있습니다. 비디오 테잎은 개와 고양이가 먹을 것이나 물도 먹지 못한채 좁은 케이지에 구겨넣어진채로 다른 나라로 운송되며 이 와중에 그들은 죽거나 죽어가거나 심각한 부상을 당하기도 합니다. 중국남부의 시장에서 조사자들의 보고에 따르면 20마리의 고양이들이 케이지 하나에 구겨넣어져 있고 죽은 고양이들이 그 위를 덮고 있었다고 합니다. 살아있는 개와 고양이들이 좁은 케이지 안에 겹겹이 쌓여 괴로와하다가 트럭위에서 딱딱한 아스팔트 위로 내 던져집니다. 이러한 동물들 중에는 과거에 한번은 누군가의 사랑을 받았을 반려동물임을 보여주는 이름표와 ID 태그를 걸고 있었습니다. 고양이들은 이미 죽은 동료곁에서 질식해 숨져가고 있습니다. 개는 금속 올가미에 목이 매달린채 심하게 맞으면서 죽어가고 고양이는 살아있는 채 끓는 물에 집어넣어집니다.

개/고양이 모피상품은 다른 이름의 동물의 모피로 둔갑하여 다른 나라로 수출되기도 합니다. 구매자들은 제품에 대해 제대로 표시되어 있지 않고 염색이 된 모피로 만든 부츠와 코트를 의심없이 구입합니다. 이렇듯 중국과 다른 나라들 사이에 용납할 수 없는 무역형태가 존재합니다

중국모피산업조사보고서에 따르면 충격적인 잔학행위가 다른 동물들, 너구리, 밍크, 여우 등 과 같은 동물에게도 자행되고 있다고 합니다. 비디오를 보면 알 수 있듯 중국의 모피시장에서는 동물을 몽둥이로 마구 때리고 목을 매달고 전기충격을 주어 감전사하도록 하며 질식시켜 죽이고 있습니다. 허베이성의 농장에서 촬영된 비디오에는 개와 여우 다른 동물들의 모피를 벗겨내는 장면을 보여줍니다. 현장을 목격한 조사자에 따르면 엄청난 수의 동물들이 여전히 의식이 있는 상태에서 그들의 복부의 뒤쪽으로부터 그 동물의 머리끝 순서로 모피를 벗겨내고 있다고 합니다. 모피를 빼앗긴 동물은 조사테잎에서 볼 수 있듯 이미 그러한 순서를 거친 동료의 사체위로 내 던져지는데 이들 동물은 모피가 벗겨진 상태에서도 5분에서 10분 동안 여전히 숨을 쉬고 심장이 고동치며 눈을 깜박이거나 몸을 움직이는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

당신은 중국의 수백만의 고통받는 동물의 고통을 덜어주어야 할 책임이 있으며 충분히 그럴만한 위치에 있습니다.

우리는 의상을 아름답게 꾸미기 위해 동물을 가혹하게 다루는 나라를 방문하지 않을 것입니다. 그것은 궁극적으로는 인간과 가까이에 있으면서 인간에게 충심을 다하고 헌신하는 동물에 대한 배신이기 때문입니다. 우리는 개와 고양이는 물론 인간이 아닌 다른 모든 동물을 향한 학대행위를 중단하고 가시적인 성과가 있지 않는 한 2008년 올림픽후원과 중국관광, 중국과의 무역을 보이콧 할 것 임을 천명합니다.

Dear Mr. President,

There is a Chinese proverb that says \"To close one\'s eyes willnot ease another\'s pain.\"We write this letter to implore you to openyour eyes to the unspeakable suffering endured by the millions ofanimals in your country, including domestic dogs and cats, who arekilled for their fur.We urge you to make enforceable animalprotection laws a priority before the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Pleasedo not let the atrocities of the fur industry tarnish your imageduring the Games. In particular, we urge you to immediately enactenforceable laws to ban China\'s dog/cat fur trade and the liveskinning of all fur-bearing animals as part of a comprehensive set ofanimal welfare laws and regulations.Recent investigations have uncovered the shocking cruelties of theChinese fur industry.Video footage that can be found at http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/Prefs.asp?video=trent_fur shows cageddogs and cats stacked into wire cages for cross-country transportwithout food or water, some already dead or dying, many more withrotting wounds. At an animal market in Southern China, investigatorsdocumented 20 cats smashed inside one wire cage and dead cats drapedover cages. Live dogs and cats are flattened inside cages the size offiling drawers and tossed from truck beds on to hard pavement. Animalsscream as their paws are crushed, their bones shattered. Some of thesecats and dogs still wear collars and ID tags, demonstrating that oncethey were someone\'s beloved pet.Cats are choked in their cagesalongside live cats. Dogs are hung from wire nooses and slashed acrossthe groin, and cats boiled alive.Dog/cat fur items are then deceptively and fraudulently labeled asGae-wolf, Sobaki, Asian Jackal, Wildcat, Goyangi, Katzenfelle, orother names before being exported abroad. Unsuspecting shopperspurchase unmarked, dyed or vaguely labeled boots, coats, linings, toysand homeopathic remedies.These are unacceptable trade practices fromChina or any other country.As documented in the enclosed video Fun Fur? A Report on the ChineseFur Industry, equally shocking atrocities are also committed againstother fur-bearing animals including raccoons, minks and foxes. As youwill see in this video, Chinese fur markets violently bludgeon, hang,electrocute and strangle fur-bearing animals. At fur farms in HebeiProvince, investigators videotaped workers carving off skin and furfrom alert dogs, foxes and other animals. Investigators witnessed asignificant number of animals that were still alive when the skinningprocess beganstarting with a knife at the rear of the belly andending with the fur being pulled over the animal\'s head. After theskin was removed, investigators taped animals being thrown on a pileof other carcasses. These animals were still breathing, had aheartbeat, and continued moving and blinking for between five to tenminutes after their skin had been ripped from their bodies.As the philosopher Jeremy Bentham famously put it nearly 200 hundredyears ago, \"The question is not, Can they reason? nor Can they talk?but, Can they suffer?\" Mr. President, if your eyes are open, youcannot doubt that the answer is a devastating, blood-curdling \"yes\". They can, and they do.Fortunately, you have the power, and with itthe responsibility, to end the suffering of millions of animals inChina.We will not visit a country that brutalizes animals to decorate asweater, line a coat or become a trinket. This is the ultimatebetrayal of creatures who are instinctively trustworthy and devotedcompanions to people.
